The Development and Applications of ITO Coated Plastic

Requiring high deposition temperatures, ITO coatings were initially used primarily for applications on glass. Continual research & development now allows ITO Coatings to supply an extensive range of ITO coated plastic products.

The Beginning of ITO Coatings

Transparent and highly conductive, ITO coatings are deposited onto varying substrates to maintain their optical clarity while amplifying their conductivity. Applying clear conductive coatings to substrates is of vital importance to many applications, including, for example, EMI/RFI shielded displays and touch screens.

To achieve good optical clarity while offering low sheet resistances, however, ITO coatings initially required deposition temperatures exceeding 190° C (374° F). This, of course, meant they were virtually exclusively utilized on glass – which is comparatively heavy, expensive, unyielding and susceptible to impact damage.

The Need for Change

The rapid, continual evolution of consumer electronics makes it a must for industrial designers & manufacturers to unceasingly seek and develop new methods of making their devices more cost effective, lighter and thinner while simultaneously improving their performance.

In today’s optical displays market, the most popular and fastest growing approach to keeping up with the evermore sophisticated demands of consumers is to use Indium Tin Oxide – or ITO – coated polymer display substrates.

ITO Coated Plastic

Combining cutting-edge technology with innovation, research, development and years of experience, Diamond Coatings has developed a low-temperature vacuum deposition method that allows us to produce an extensive range of ITO plastic supplies.

Able to deposit our optically clear, highly conductive Diamox ITO & Diamox+ ITO (Index-Matched) coatings onto polycarbonate, acrylic & polyester (and, naturally, glass) substrates, we have a highly flexible handling system for substrates that allows us to coat both flat and shaped substrates, as well as a variety of injection molded parts.

Our ITO coatings are now subsequently available for applications where substrate limitations previously made their use impossible. In addition, we can also produce an extensive selection of hard and anti-glare coating options.

ITO Coated Plastic Applications

Offering outstanding peak light transmission and EMI/RFI shielding effectiveness, as well as high impact & temperature resistance, ITO plastic is the perfect solution for 21st Century consumer electronics, automotive and aerospace; military & defence, space and medical; research & development, imaging & microscopy and entertainment applications including:

  • Resistive/Capacitive Touch Panels/Touch Screens
  • Electrostatic Dissipation
  • Heated Display (Optically Clear) Filters
  • Photovoltaic Cells
  • EMI & RFI Shielding and More
