Anti Reflective Coatings
Although we normally have articles relating to ITO coatings, we would like to introduce another form of coating that is increasingly in demand from our customers – Anti reflective coatings.
An anti reflective coating is utilised in a variety of applications based on requirements within specific settings, with these including retail, medical and environmental to name some areas. Anti reflective coatings are used to… yes, you guessed it, minimise or complete remove reflections.
Why do you need anti reflective coatings?
There are a multitude of usage options, but let’s focus on ones mentioned above to start with. Retail environments are often very well lit, and where there is light there will always be reflections.
Stores would rather a potential customer can view their wares in the most optimum way, so anti reflective coatings are used – in retail store displays, store front windows and anywhere else that glass or plastic might be obscuring views.
The same ethos applies to the medical industry, notably in areas such as intensive care and maternity units. In environmental applications, anti reflective coatings are making a serious positive impact; solar cells will receive up to 30% more sunlight than uncoated solar panels and smart glass can assist in reducing or increasing internal temperatures, which removes either cooling or heating costs and the energy outputs required.
More recent anti reflective coating requirements
The last 2 years have seen the world we live in change dramatically thanks to the global pandemic. The fight to contain the virus included the erection of clear glass or plastic screens to form protective barriers for those on either side of the screens.
We like to think we played a small part in assisting this fight by supplying either anti reflective glass or plastic screens, or an anti reflective film that could be fitted to existing screens.
As well as the anti reflective coatings on barrier screens, we also produced anti reflective face shields, by far the most advanced shields available, offering near zero reflection on both sides of the shield.
As we (hopefully) move out of the pandemic, we can perhaps focus on other anti reflective applications that may bring more happiness to the world. Think sports stadiums with VIP areas behind glass panels, Zoos and aquariums and art galleries and museums.
There will come a time where we can look forward and enjoy these environments and all they have to offer, and even more so with anti reflective coatings present to enhance our visual experiences further.
